Article 1
The article Women’s Colleges Welcome Transgender Students under Expanded Admission Policies by Julia Glum is about a new college policy by Smith College to accommodate all those people who consider themselves transgender. The institution is a liberal arts college located in Massachusetts and it only admits women. However, it has decided to change this policy by accepting students with other sexual orientations. According to the article, six more colleges have already started admitting transgender students. The report notes of further recent changes, which are aimed at ensuring recognition of people with diverse sexualities. The author notes that one of the most popular social media sites, Facebook, has implemented changes that will give its users more options to define their sexuality. Such changes are occurring in various sectors, and more people are embracing them.
The changes in admission mean that the institutions will have to change the infrastructure as well. They have already constructed gender-neutral bathrooms, and many of them are looking into ways of changing their accommodation. They want to ensure that all students are catered for and are comfortable with their studies. The changes in some of the schools have been riddled with controversies, with some of the alumnae raising concerns about the changing identities of the institutions. Others were concerned that the admission of people who were more aligned to males would disrupt the unity of the institutions. Some of the students were concerned that the transgender students would not receive the fair and equal treatment that they deserved while at the institution. One of the students interviewed noted that women institutions are more liberal and open, and they are the only ones that can allow students with non-traditional sexual orientation
Article 2
Eric Hoover reports on the results of the National Association for College Admission Counseling in his article 3 Key Findings about College Admissions. He notes that colleges today have to implement many changes to ensure that they attract additional students. College presidents have to ensure that they have enough students at their institution, as this will help to generate revenue for the institutions. Competition for foreign students has increased significantly over the years. Therefore, colleges have to be flexible in how they manage their admissions. Although many students apply to colleges, the number of those who are accepted has continued to decrease in the recent past. One of the leading causes of this is affordability. As four-year colleges become more expensive, many students are opting to go to community colleges, which are much cheaper.
Transfer students
have become more important as they are increasing enrollments at the institutions. Some schools have gone as far as
providing counselors to help the transfer students in their transition from
community colleges to the four-year colleges. There has been an increase in the
number of foreign students studying in American high schools and colleges.
Colleges have intensified their recruitment of international students. The
author notes that there is international competition for foreign students. As American colleges go to recruit overseas, other
international colleges are recruiting in America. Hence, as more foreign students choose to study in America, some
American students are choosing to study abroad for their undergraduate courses.
The author notes that there is a need for American universities to be vigilant
even as they look for international students. They should also ensure that they
can attract American students as well.
