Compare and Contrast Two Theories and Discuss Their Views on a Problem Facing Our Society
The conflict theory enhances the role of power and coercion with the aim achieving a society in which there is order. The theory originated from the observation of Karl Max who viewed the society as a segmentation of people trying to compete for the limited social and economic resources. For social order to exist there must be a form of power dominating over the people. This power is held by those ranked highly in social, political and economic fields.
The conflict theory emphasizes the omnipresent nature of conflict, the effects it has on stimulating social change and the inequalities in power and resources. The theory also highlights the manner in which various societal elements contribute to its collapse as well as the use of coercion to maintain control in society (Johnson, 2008).
Functionalist theory originates lay more focus on how the society remains stable. The theory interprets every part of the society based on how it contributes to the stability of the whole society. Its emphasis is mostly on stability, integration, value agreement and functional integration (Johnson, 2008). The theory advocates for the separation of labor or tasks among the different subgroups in the society. It is interested in how all these sub groups function for the total betterment of the society as a whole.
In a scenario where there is a problem in the society, the functionalist theory will perceive the problem in terms of the small groups charged with the responsibilities of developing the society. It will root down to the specific group charged with that duty for example in case of insecurity, the police force will be held liable. In conflict theory, the perception is based on social control and management. There are those charged with the responsibility of overseeing the societal development. In case of an insecurity matter, the theory dictates that the ministry in charge of security addresses the issue.
