Comparing Apples to Oranges
The civilian
police and the military forces are the departments in the government, which are
inn charge of protecting the citizens against any form of attack. The security
of the nation is ensured by both these two entities. However, the roles
undertaken are quite different thus enabling one to differentiate between the
two. The civilian international police can be described as law enforcers who
are charged with the responsibility of managing peacekeeping operations (Police
Foundation Staff n.d, 1). Their first deployment was by the United Nations five
decades ago. They are under the control of the UN. The mentioned points the
first difference. Military Forces are usually under the command of the
commander-in- Chief who is the president of the nation. However, the military
forces under the command of the president are also deployed to war-torn areas
to maintain peace (Col Brinkerloff 2009, 1). The second role of the civilian
police is to reformation of the local police. The civilian police attaint this
by providing and leading the training programs to the departmental police
officers. Unlike the civil police, the military only collaborates with the
local police departments in severe cases where the national security has been
compromised (UK Ministry of Defense 2009, 1) thus pointing out the second
difference. The third difference is the civilian international police are able
to shift from their military oriented security operations and revert to
community policing (Police Foundation Staff n.d, 1). This is because they are
trained to deal with the local police in first reforming and encouraging them
to follow the new polices as well as their functions and determining the
efficiency and competence of the local police. In the role played by the
military, they are unable to shift roles. Their duties pertain to maintaining
both international and national security with strict enforcement unlike the
local and civil police.
