Construction Project Manager
In most construction undertakings, the project manager has sole control and responsibility over the project. In this regard, the project manager plays the role of defining the structure of the scheme and the various objectives that need to be achieved. He or she also controls and directs every task pertaining to the project. Additionally, project managers play the role of controlling and assigning budgets and master schedules. As such, only the PM has the authority of making the final decision regarding task changes and tradeoff studies within the contract statement. It is prudent to understand that construction projects vary in terms of complexity, value, and duration. Therefore, the project manager may opt to elect one or more junior managers. Similarly, he or she may delegate multiple or single duties.
With the fundamental roles and responsibilities of a PM highlighted above, it is prudent that the PM have certain traits, qualifications and characteristics. As such, professional qualification is the paramount consideration in this regard. The PM is supposed to have academic qualification that warrants him or her to undertake such a position. Experience is also fundamental in guaranteeing that the project is executed with high rates of success.
In terms of traits and characteristics, the PM needs to have excellent leadership skills. Since the project manager is responsible for coordinating the entire technical staff, such skills are necessary to keep the staff motivated and on track. Additionally, the PM should have communication skills and hence link the business managers with the technical staff. Through such skills, the technical staff is capable of carrying out the project in accordance with the wishes of the superiors. Moreover, the PM needs to have problem solving skills that come in handy dealing with unexpected challenges. In conclusion, a PM who satisfies the criteria stipulated above is bound to execute a successful construction project.
