Creating a Roster
Task 2
Employee consultation is important, but there has to be information exchange. Much as the employees want the management to consider their preferences, they also have to consider the goals and objectives. Therefore, they have to be aware of the limits and extent of their involvement. When deciding on the shifts, the management, or the person responsible has to consider different factors such as how the employees can combine their social and family lives with their work. They also have to consider issues of safety and health, within and outside the organization (Smith et al. 1-2). Many employers opt for rotating rosters because of the flexibility they offer. Knowing the roster schedule in advance will help the employees to manage and plan their time well. Other important factors to consider include difficulty of the task, workplace and government regulations and time of operation (Voudouris 132)
I have decided to give Caitlin the 9-5:30pm shift so that she can take care of her family and spend time with her children. This will give her enough time in the morning and evening. Kerry can work the 9-5:30pm shift with Caitlin, Noah, and Mathew, and put in some hours on Saturday. This will give her enough time to attend to her social life in the evening, and she can continue going to her salsa classes. I think that it is important for Sam to have enough time to take care of her son considering she is a single mother. She is comfortable with the early morning shift, since this allows her adequate time in the evening to be with her son. In addition, the hours coincide with most day care centers and she will not have to worry about looking for an extra person to take care of her son. William does not prefer the morning shift, and I have given him the 11am-8:30pm shift, which he is comfortable with. In some cases, it is important to consider the workers preferences as this can have an effect on productivity.
Mathew is new to the company, and he has to work with different people who have more experience than he does. I have considered his social life, and have therefore given him Saturday’s off so that he can play cricket, however, he has to work on Sundays with Noah. Noah observes his religion, and this exempts him from work on Friday evenings and on Saturday. Therefore, he has to work on Sundays and on other days other than Saturday and Friday. Caroline has enough experience in the job, and she can handle any workday. She does not seem to have a reason for not working on weekends, and I have given her the Saturday shift, where she will work together with Kerry. Kim Li can handle the morning shift, which will enable her to take part in other activities.
