Many American households lack adequate access to mental health services due to the inability to pay. The program-level logic model highlights how the Medicaid program will use the Affordable Care Act to ensure the State of Georgia offers reachable mental health treatments, including behavioural health. In 2019, it was found that 2.2 million uninsured adults with household income near or below the poverty line lack pathways to mental health coverage (Sullivan et al., 2021, para 2). By improving Medicaid coverage, the Georgia Medicaid program will reduce barriers to mental health services and increase access to behavioural health providers. With proper funding, legislative support, human capital, health infrastructure, and technical assistance, the Medicaid program will improve knowledge of behavioural health while reducing behavioural risk factors among Georgians.
Working on the logic model was a good way to improve program planning and monitoring. The tool focuses on inputs, outputs, and activities, which helps remove any assumptions present in the structure of the mental health program. I concur with Greenfield et al.’s (2016, p.23) claim that logic modeling sheds light on the ambiguity of a team’s understanding and delivery of its project mission. It was my perception that working on the logic model helped clarify the project’s goals and the resources and steps required to achieve them. The resultant effect was the ability to understand relationships and issues that merit closer attention.
