Encouraging Incoming Students to Become Involved in leadership Roles on Campus
Active involvement in leadership roles within the institution provides numerous opportunities for personal and educational growth. A majority of incoming students do not have the interest to venture into leadership positions within the institution largely because of the lack of exposure to leadership positions in their lives. The opportunities for interaction with other individuals provide avenues for discovery of individual strengths and weaknesses and the appropriate means of dealing with such individual discoveries.
Enhancement of social interaction skills is one of the main benefits of involvement in leadership positions within the institution given that it provides significant exposure to diversity, new knowledge and understanding differences that exist between people drawn from different regions around the world. As a student leader, one assumes a position of a role model for new students and the society as well in providing appropriate guidance and counsel. In the process, one achieves essential decision-making skills and abilities that can be applied in social interactions and in organizations.
Assuming a leadership position within campus provides an opportunity for understanding individual capacities and abilities towards becoming a leader. In the process of execution of duties and responsibilities within the leadership position, one is able to improve on individual qualities that are appropriate for success in the institution as well as in modern organizations. Social, cultural and leadership development is facilitated by the positions provided to incoming students who are deemed as fit for leadership positions. Leadership opportunities provide students with avenues to achieve individual academic excellence through the exposure that is provided by leadership positions within the institution.
Leadership opportunities within the institution provide excellent opportunities for individuals to display their respective skills, knowledge, talents and interests. This may also provide an individual with an avenue to achieve new sets of skills, knowledge and interactions with their peers and mentors in other leadership capacities within the institution. As a leader, one is also tasked with nurturing incoming students and interaction guests and partners of the institution towards development of the institution as a center of academic excellence.
Essentially, student leadership programs and activities within the institution are effective means of enhancing academic, social interactions and extra curriculum achievement in the institution. This is because they provide avenues for active engagement for students with their peers, mentors and tutors. The incoming students provide the institution with diversity in terms of new ideas, energy and zeal in the institution, cultural diversity, and social skills differences, which can be shared and acquired within leadership activities.
On the other hand, it is important to note that leadership positions and activities within the institution are laden with challenges because of diversity among students. Such challenges arise in terms differences in ideas, cultural and social norms differences, academic abilities and knowledge among existing and incoming students. There may be biases in leadership activities and positions, which must be addressed through democratic processes.
In conclusion, incoming students should view leadership positions and activities as avenues for learning and gaining from constant interactions with peers and mentors. This provides one with an essential background for successful engagement and interaction within modern organizations. Gains such as new ideas, discovery of individual abilities, talents and gifts, new knowledge and information and social interaction skills should be the main drivers for incoming students seeking leadership positions in the institution.
