Graphic Design Case Study
Stream One: Sikka Art and Design Festival
Sikka Art and Design Festival was powerful and transformative in its portrayal of historical Dubai culture. The art installations, focusing on the Sidr Tree, were unique and professional in how they blended elements of nature and technology. However, the design displays focused mostly on Dubai’s traditional culture despite the festival being a launching pad for international artists. I would seek to inspire more contemporary and technological themes associated with Dubai’s recent emergence as a metropolitan powerhouse, such as digital silkscreen printing and algorithmic photograph portraits (AI generated photography). With minimal financial and physical limitations, I would also extend the event to include other urban neighborhoods in Dubai. The goal is to ensure both historical and urban neighborhoods are transformed into open museums to provide different inspirations. Dubai has continuously ensured its culture and heritage remain accessible, a theme that the festival should foster. It would be nice to see if Dubai culture can be exhibited fully in interactive, virtual 3D rendering for increased reach and engagement of audiences and artists.
Stream Two: The Aimes Social Media
TheAimes produces creative, narrative-driven art festivals to showcase classical and modern art. The goal of the organization is to provide new approaches for cultural public engagement. With this information regarding its mission at hand, I would opt for social media platforms that reflect such values, including the ability for creatives to be free, interactive and even controversial. Suitable social media platforms would be Instagram, Pinterest, Planoli, Canva, Tumblr and Twitter. Such platforms guarantee the freedom of expression, allowing artists to be creative, engaging and controversial in challenging social norms and occurences. Since TheAimes targets a Middle Eastern audience, I would embrace an eclectic approach in my graphic design, emphasizing Arabic topography by marrying tradition to innovation. Traditional Islamic geometry whose form changes kaleidoscopically. While the tone is reserved and conservative, it is equally evocative in highlight culture occurs in a continuum.
