Hadith
Hadith, from the depiction made, are the various teachings of Prophet Muhammad, which were symbolic on the life lessons that each Muslim should follow in their own capacities. The form and function of this passage are important as they show the relevance and applicability of the lessons being offered to the Islam faithful. The hadith like the one in the passage is important historically to denote that life’s lessons began from the origins of humanity to present day. Spiritually, it indicates that abstinence from evil and doing your part in charity is noble and most important as man.
In terms of early Islam, the source when read more productively is a normative one. It ensures that the determined habits and norms within the faith are communicated to even the present day members. Using the above source, one argument that can be made of early Islam is that the teachings did not take any liberal stance to in regards to Muslim behavior. For example, not all the actions had any option, it was the given mandate as per Muhammad, and nothing else was condoned such as the giving of alms.
Kecia Ali’s main argument in The Lives of Muhammad is that there are various coexisting approaches to the life of Muhammad among both Muslims and non-Muslims. Using the hadith, historians can interpret the material in different ways. For example, one can state that charity is mandatory according to the teachings. Another can interpret that charity is not mandatory if the Muslim is not doing any evil in the society. Another can interpret that instead of charity, one should help the oppressed as well as the unhappy persons through words or actions.
