Industrialization and Imperialism
Based on the arguments highlighted in this essay, it is evident that industrialization resulted in imperialism in various developed nations around the globe. Industrial revolution in America stabilized following the Civil War with the manufacturing industries adopting technological mechanisms to increase their productivity. Consequently, the supply of products in the American market surpassed the demand. This had a negative effect on the national economy with the number of unemployed citizens increasing rapidly. The federal government and other influential parties perceived imperialism as the most effective and practical solution to this nationalized problem. This entailed the expansion of America’s influence to other geological zones of the world. Nonetheless, this strategy attracted considerable conflicts with other nations that had adopted this totalitarian approach. This explains the interest of the American government in the Spanish-American war.
In my perspective, the approaches used by the federal government of the United States were unsuitable especially since a large percentage of the inhabitants of the affected countries lost their lives, their family members, and possessions. The principles of imperialism did not cater for both parties. For example, the centralized government of the United States justified their actions in the Spanish-American war by claiming a role in improving the living standards of citizens in regions exemplifying minimal social, economic, and political developments. Perceiving itself as a superior nation with the moral obligation of instilling certain business and social values in other regions without their consent indicates the inept nature of imperialism. Despite its effectiveness in expanding America’s market to other global zones, imperialism negatively affected the relations between the United States and other countries. It was difficult for American inhabitants to dwell in these regions without experiencing certain forms of discrimination or hostility. Accordingly, it is rational to assert that imperialism was not suitable in addressing the interests of America and its citizens in a holistic manner.
