Interracial Relationships
The African – American sexual relationships with the whites has always been viewed with skepticism, much because of the evils of slavery. Women were either coerced, or forced into having intercourse with their masters, losing their dignity, in the hope that some day their sacrifice would either earn them their freedom or make it worthwhile. Interracial sexual relations are quite common and over the years, still have unattractive labels and consequences. For instance, Trevor Noah, a South African stand-up comedian, is the son of a Xhosa mother, and a German-Swiss father. His parents’ relationship blossomed in the height of apartheid in South Africa. However much it seemed as though the relationship was blissful, his father abandoned them, and the mother still had to pay the price of being a black woman and married to a white man.
Questions as to whether the interracial relationships are historically hinged on the vices of slavery such as rape still linger on. In the case of Johnson and Chinn, who were husband and wife, yet at the same time, master, and slave, it is difficult to establish whether or not the husband was caring and loving or if he was just a merciless slave master. These notions are based on the historical slavery ideologies that have continued to permeate our society. What is projected in stories of black women married to white men is the idea that they had no control whatsoever over their own sexuality because they were enslaved both mentally and physically. Interracial relationships, especially those between the blacks and the whites have always been viewed with much skepticism, because of the mindsets of most people. The issue of stereotyping interracial relationships must be addressed, as there are very many unsettling approaches and perspectives about them, which are deeply ingrained in the society.
