As the captain of a soccer team, I have been able to interact with people from diverse cultures and social backgrounds. This has enhanced my overall communication and social skills thus enabling my qualities as a leader. I think that have appropriate and efficacious social and communication skills enhances the chances of succeeding as a leader in a modern organization. The position has been influential to my life planning skills. The life-planning dimension has been enhanced through better knowledge and skills that are appropriate towards achievement of set out targets, goals and objectives.
Life planning can be likened to basic organizational duties such as planning, decision-making, allocation of resources, delegation of duties and responsibilities, and teamwork are among some of the enhanced skills that I have gained over the period I was a soccer team captain. As a foreigner, I have gained understanding of the importance of diversity and I am inclined to respect diversity in the workplace. An effective leader respects diversity and uses it as a means of enhancing productivity and employee engagement in the workplace.
Modern organizations function as teams, with success being reliant on individual and overall team input. Additionally, my experience as a team captain provided me with an avenue to enhance my intellectual dimension. Knowledge towards understanding diversity, multiculturalism and the essence of team effort for success in modern organizations was enhanced by position as a team captain.
My cultural understanding has been enhanced over the years, since my first exposure to other cultures through the position of a team captain. I have been able to accept the importance of diversity in culture and its contribution towards knowledge and skills base for the modern organization. I am able to relate effectively with people irrespective of their social, cultural, financial and racial background. This is an effective leadership quality for success in modern organizations.
