Questions
- Are school districts providing school; health administrations with professional IT assistance in the adoption of electronic student health records?
- Is school nursing well prepared to comprehensively describe sensitive student outcomes using EBP activities?
Something Learned
- The article provides a new perspective on the role of the nurse by highlighting the interplay between health and the academic success of patients/students. School health administration extends beyond typical health care to consider the individual academic needs of the student (page 898).
- The need to comprehensively monitor the health and performance of each student underpins the emerging role of the nurse in promoting the implementation of electronic student health records (page 898).
- However, I did not know there is a lack of proper implementation of electronic health records in schools due to minimal compliance to HIPAA (page 899).
- There is a general lack of interoperability between student data management systems and community-based health records. The lapse calls for enhanced collaboration between the private school administrators, school district officials and public health officials (page 901).
Issues Raised
- If there is a lack of compatibility between the private data management systems used in schools and community-based health databases, how best can the nurse promote the adoption of electronic health records? It is my experience that school nurses require expert assistance from information technology professionals to capture and address the requirements for health record standards (page 905).
- Therefore, school administration must find ways to ensure school nurses are actively involved in the selection, development and maintenance of health documentation systems (page 890).
- The nurse is part of the IT team that determines and implements suitable policies and procedures to ensure the effective use of electronic health records in schools. The emerging role underpins the need to include digital and computing literacy in contemporary nursing curricula (page 891).
