Non-Pharmacological and Pharmacological Therapies
Q1.
As a psychiatrist, I need to work with KT to reduce the severity of her anxiety symptoms. The best approach to apply is psychotherapy. I would employ cognitive behavioral therapy, as it is documented to be effective in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (Bandelow et al. 2017). The method focuses on teaching a specific set of skills to directly manage worries and help the patient to gradually return to activities that they miss due to their triggering effect. Psychotherapy can help KT stop fearing her academics. Slowly, the patient will relearn how to find studying and exams to be interesting.
Q2.
The simultaneous use of psychotherapy and medication is the quickest and most sustainable approach to addressing WD’s major depressive disorder. While there are a wide range of possible treatment, using a single approach might prove ineffective for WD because he is an adult (Holvast et al. 2017). Medication, specifically serotonin inhibitors, and brief cognitive-behavioral therapy will relieve the patient’s symptoms. There is also empirical evidence that brief psychotherapy (CBT) has the ability to prevent relapse (Holvast et al. 2021). The approach requires face to face sessions with the patient to be effective.
Q3.
JM needs to change her approach and attitude towards life as they are reinforcing the negative behaviors associated with her depression. Therefore, cognitive behavioral therapy is the best non-pharmacological option for the patient. Treatment sessions should encourage her to seek employment, change her level of hygiene, work on her sleeping hours and reduce the amount of coffee consumed. As opposed to sleep medication, JM should switch to tricyclic anti-depressants. Depression is the underlying cause of the sleeping disorder, meaning treatment should focus on the mental condition and not sleep.
