Non-Verbal Communication
My highest subsection scores were on facial expressions. On answering the questionnaire, I expected those scores. My basis revolves on the fact that facial expressions reveal the characteristics of an individual suiting my preferred means of non-verbal communication. In my understanding, facial expressions relay a message about the internal feelings to the expresser. In order for me to express my emotions regarding a particular topic or a certain person, I use my face. The impact of facial expressions on communication is profound. Its concepts are inclusive of a characteristic of the person, how the perceiver interprets the signs, the visual configuration embodying the characteristic and the basis of the appearance of the facial part relaying the sign.
In regards to competence, facial expressions communicate my emotion in a particular situation. In a melancholic situation, a frown or a cringe usually expresses displeasure. I believe facial expressions are highly expressive enabling me to express a myriad of emotions without utilizing any verbal means. Facial expressions are also effective in situations where language is a barrier. Individuals can express themselves without incorporating gestures and body movements that are other aspects of non-verbal communication. In my opinion, facial expressions have following advantages: they can indicate sarcasm, alter the implication of a statement said, and indicate friendliness or hostility. Facial expressions also give non-verbal cues on the comfortabilty or emotional state of people thus offer a better understanding on the person’s character and situation.
My lowest subsection scores were on non-verbal receptivity. The scores awarded on that particular subsection were expected. The scores are justified by stating it is personality related. In support of the line of thought that states conforming to societal norms is an individual’s choice. Society dictates people should follow a certain behavioral pattern of being receptive to what is considered correct. Outspoken people are misunderstood and viewed to be rebellious by refusing to conform to the expected norms. Stating an opinion should be taken politely as everyone has the right to affirm their opinion without intending to be rude or inconsiderate to other people’s stances. Some individuals lack the right skills when expressing their intentions, this can be by far misinterpreted, thus considered as a misunderstanding. I believe most people tend to veil their emotions by pretending to be pleased with a state of affairs. In such an instance, the failure to detect interpersonal trouble is likely to occur. When a character is faced by a problem, they should state it and not anticipate it to be acknowledged.
Judging from the scores on non-verbal receptivity, the behaviour can suggest arrogance and narcissistic character. This has a depressing effect in effective communication and interaction. On recognition that the behaviors though well intended, can be misunderstood. Improvements on how to communicate with people and being sensitive can be implemented. These include taking time to rationalize people’s intentions and sentiments prior to responding or passing judgment. Instances were an opinion should be stated, consideration its impact should be observed. Developing a genuine interest in people can also assist me in detecting interpersonal problems and offer aid if need be. The same applies in the aspect of being unacquainted with happenings around me. Instilling interest in the surrounding will definitely dissolve unawareness and give way to proper communication.
