Professional Socialization in Nursing
The
nursing profession comprises of more than business activities and abilities. Nurses
go through a socialization process that involves internalization and improvement
of professional identity. Socialization among nurses is associated with passing
through specific experiences that happen while working. Growing as a nurse involves
personal dedication and incorporation of values during the course of professional
socialization (Huston, 2006). Professional uniqueness involves the manner in
which a person perceives him/herself as a nurse, who can carry out nursing roles
competently and sensibly. From an expert’s viewpoint, professional
socialization is the practice of attaining skills and basic knowledge to realize
a professional position with valued and certified norms. Two main ways exist
through which socialization occurs. The first way is through official training
and education. This approach involves using official structured curriculums and
teaching programs. The other way through which socialization occurs is through
informal methods (Huston, 2006). Older and more experienced nurses have a
wealth of knowledge that they can pass down to the new recruits. Experienced
nurses have a detailed understanding of the administrative and practice side of
the industry and their contribution cannot be ignored. Socialization plays a
major role in refining the skills and quality of services offered by nurses
significantly. Nurses will benefit greatly from being socialized in the proper
way. Professional socialization is essential for guiding the students in the
industrial practice. The problem of gender parity in the recruitment, socialization
and career advancement, the nursing sector has ensured that females are
underrepresented (Huston, 2006). Consequently, the focus in recent years has
been to increase recruitment and training of female staff members.
