Rebuilding Democracy
In the beginning of the talk by Rory Stewart, the British Prime minister, he gives an example whereby a young boy is lied to by his father concerning his profession. The father is a politician. According to him, the profession is usually viewed as having the most corrupt and conceited personalities. He argues that according to the various views forwarded by different people from varied occupations, democracy offers freedom as it respects both the rights of the leaders and citizens. A government built on democracy ensures that neighboring states are at peace with each other, financial stability and increased security with low tolerance on terrorism. In order to bring out the fact that democracy, despite the perquisites it offers, it can be interlinked by corruption, weakened security and financial instability, the examples used are the Arabic states such as Iraq and Afghanistan. The stance taken by the Prime Minister is that democracy offers freedom to the people and the leaders alike and it is through it that a nation succeeds.
According to Amartya Sen in her article Democracy as a universal value, there are several main points, which point out to her stance in how democracy should be viewed. She reiterates that democracy has always been gradual process which over the years has developed into an improve concept. The historical case scenarios presented by the author is the signing of the Magna Carta that ensured the feudal king of the states had limited power in rulership and presented the villagers with rights to freedom and reduced taxes. Another main important aspect that is brought forth is that democracy is universal as displayed by various nations all over the world. In accordance to both the Prime Minister and Sen’s viewpoints, they concur with my held belief that democracy is a driving force, which a nation is driven instilling values that fight off the social ills present. In support of Sen, democracy is a universal concept and should remain so in order to level the field for the developing and developed worlds.
