Safe Workplace
Many organizations strive to ensure that there are minimal or no injuries and accidents in the workplace. However, some of the occurrences in different workplaces show that this is not an adequate safety objective. Having low injuries in the workplace does not mean that it is safe. In some situations, some accidents are not reported and this contributes to the low injury records. In other cases, workplace accidents can affect people outside the organization. This is especially the case with companies that deal with chemicals and have emissions. They may have taken the necessary precautions to protect their workers, but they may not have done anything to protect the external environment. Some organizations deal with chemicals, which are major hazards. The employees working in such environments may not report any injuries. However, exposure to such hazards can lead to disease and sickness later on in life. Some diseases take time to develop and one may not know the dangers facing him when he is working.
Safety measures should go above injury prevention. Any measures should ensure that workers safety is guaranteed by reducing or eliminating safety hazards. Measures guiding workplace safety should include diverse safety issues aimed at ensuring the health of the employees (Hughes & Ferrent, 2011). It should recognize any possible hazards, event those that do not cause any injuries. A safe workplace recognizes all hazards and informs all the workers about them. It provides the necessary measures to contain such hazards. The company should note the causes and outcomes of all injuries. It should encourage employees to report any incidences of ill health. This can be a pointer towards knowing whether the employees got sick because of the hazards at work.
