Special Education and Learning Disabilities
Part One
The topic I chose is Special Education and Learning Disabilities. This issue is generally overlooked because it only affects a small percentage of the population. People with learning disabilities are psychologically handicapped, but they have other aptitudes and talents that can add value to their lives and to the communities in which they live. Special education focuses on enhancing the strengths of these individuals. I am interested in this topic because of its transformational interventions. Special education focuses on the intellectual giftedness. As each child has a unique condition, he or she requires personalized care. The different approach of teaching incorporates technology and unique teaching resource rooms.
I discussed the following questions with my peers.
- Are there courses in institutions of higher learning for individuals willing to venture into special education?
- What is the fate of individuals who are unable to overcome their learning disability?
Part Two
- A learning disability is a disorder associated with psychological processes that affect the understanding and use of language.
- The disability hampers reading, spelling out words, writing, speaking, listening and thinking.
- The disability is categorized depending on various conditions such as dyslexia, perpetual disability, brain injury, and many others.
- Learning disabilities comprise the most prevalent form of disabilities worldwide.
- Some children may manifest signs of a learning disability in the early stages of education, but these symptoms disappear in elementary school.
- Children with learning disabilities face many challenges in school because they are misunderstood to be slow learners.
- Children with learning disabilities are neither ignorant nor lazy. Most of them are of average or above average intelligence.
- If an appropriate form of specialized education is applied, students exhibiting a learning disability are bound to flourish academically.
