The FCS Body of Knowledge
Question One
Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) define an inclusive sequence of skills in research and knowledge that assists people make conscious and informed decisions (American Association 2). The skills offered prepare the students to be able to meet the real-life responsibilities at home and within the community.
Question Two
The core concepts within the FCS include the basic human needs, the individual well-being, family strengths, and community vitality (American Association 3). Basic human needs cover concepts such as the physiological needs, love, safety, and a feeling of belonging. Individual well-being covers aspects that render achievement of the basic human needs. It includes physical health, mental health, and emotional stability. Family strengths cover issues related to human development and complex relationships. They incorporate pliant characteristics despite the family structures. Community vitality covers issues relating to the surrounding environment.
Question Three
The integrative elements of FCS include life course development and the human ecosystem (American Association 3). Life course development identifies the different stages covered within an ecological system. It considers the biological and social state of growth among people, the transition points, and the condition at different historic periods. Human ecosystem connects people across family lines, the physical environment and space, housing constrictions, the social regulatory environment and the human built environment.
Question Four
FCS covers five themes that include
capacity building, global interdependence, resource development, and
sustainability, appropriate use of technology and wellness (American
Association 5). Capacity building is the ability of people to identify and
solve complex problems. Global interdependence is the influence of people as
well as the consequences of their actions. Resource development and
sustainability implies managing natural and artificial resources sparingly.
Appropriate use of technology involves comprehending the advancements made in
science and technology while wellness defines health and well-being.
